Jessica’s story

In March 1997, Craig’s eldest daughter Jessica Goozee was enjoying life as most young girls do. She was looking forward to turning seven years of age and had turned into the most beautiful looking girl.

It was during a week of relaxation on a family holiday on the New South Wales Central Coast that the Goozee family discovered something that would change their lives dramatically.

On the third day of their holiday Jessica discovered a small lump on the inside of her right elbow. After both Craig and wife Lisa had inspected the lump they agreed that they would take Jessica to see the local doctor, Dr Richard Boyle on their return to Sydney and thought nothing more of it.

However, after returning to Sydney life resumed its hectic pace and it wasn’t until a week or two later when younger sister Kylie developed an ear infection that Lisa remembered to show the doctor the lump on Jessica’s elbow. After giving it the once over Dr Boyle sent them to see a specialist as the lump was solid and very unusual. The appointment was made for the following day and the specialist also didn’t like the feel of the lump and referred Jessica to the Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick for further tests.

When Lisa first attended the hospital she was met by Dr Richard Cohn, who after examining the lump in Jessica’s arm, immediately sent Lisa and Jessica to see a surgeon in another part of the hospital who organised an operation to remove the lump and conduct a biopsy.

The day following the operation the Goozee family received the worst news possible, the lump in Jessica’s arm was a tumour. Dr Cohn explained that Jessica had been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer called Ewings Sarcoma and that the recovery rate for this particular type of cancer was much lower than other types, giving Jessica about a forty percent chance of a full recovery.

Despite the horrendous news, both Lisa and Craig were surprised that Jessica didn’t flinch upon hearing her diagnosis and wasn’t the least bit worried about losing her hair or starting the intensive treatment. This was to be typical of Jessica’s behaviour, which could only be described as a ‘model patient’.

The following day Jessica commenced a twelve-month program of ‘Aggressive Chemotherapy’ which entailed visits the hospital every third week for a three or six day period, as well as six weeks of radiation treatment to the right arm where the tumour had been.

It was during these first two months that Craig spent with Jessica in hospital when he came up with the idea to raise money for the various cancer foundations that Craig had recently learnt so much about. The next thought that came to mind was to complete a marathon to raise the money. This was completely out of the blue as Craig had never completed any type of marathon in any sport and had always been more of a sprinter in his younger years.

Never the less idea grew and soon Craig had planned an 800km ocean paddle up the East Coast of Australia from Avalon to Broadbeach and A2B4C was born.

After completing the marathon and with the news that Jessica required no more treatment, the prospect of a normal life began to dawn. Soon after the marathon Craig was invited to Parliament House in Sydney to receive a Parenthood Award’ award during Children’s Week. On the way to the ceremony Craig received a phone call from Lisa who was coming to Parliament House with the children after one of Jessica’s monthly check-ups.

Lisa’s teary voice brought devastating news – doctors had found a lump back in Jessica’s arm in exact place where the previous tumour had been removed. The agony continued when Craig and Lisa were given no other option than to amputate Jessica’s right arm to stop the chance of the cancer cells spreading.

Unfortunately however the cancer returned yet again where the arm was amputated, spreading this time into Jessica’s lungs. Sadly this time there was nothing more her doctors could do and Jessica lost her battle with cancer on 24 June, 1999 aged nine.

  12. Hi Craig,

What an amazing man your are!!!!

Your strength and determination is incredible. You should be on the news everynight!!!!!

I remember going with Jess, Lisa and Kath to the Childrens Hospital. This hospital was unforgetable. The technology, staff and resources are a vital part into the wellbeing of our children. Jess’s courage was inspirational.

We are having a fundraiser for Jess and Children’s Cancer up here on Club Med Lindeman Island on the 23rd of July. Whatever we can raise is significant. Every cent counts.

We wish you a safe trip back and know that you are blessed to have a wonderful family waiting for you when you finally reach home.

    Big kisses
    Nikki, Fabrizio and Tommaso

  13. Hey there Nikki, Great to hear from you and your family. Yes, she was very special and so are the people we are raising the money for. As you say, every cent counts and the more people becoming aware of our journey is a step closer to reaching the dream amount. Keep well and all the best
    Love Craig

  14. My heart goes out to you as well as my gratitude for what you are doing. My eldest son, Christopher Johnstone died in 1995 after an almost 3 year battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma and Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. I was so pleased to see the episode of Random Acts of Kindness, especially to see Alice, who was one of Chris’ wonderful nurses. Good luck with your marathon, Craig, and I sincerely hope you achieve your goal. I pray that one day, no parent should lose a child to cancer and that this insidious disease becomes a thing of the past. It will only happen with the research that is happening at places like the CCIA.
    Best wishes,
    Josephine Bresnik

  15. Hi Craig, I just wanted to let you know that Ruby practiced for weeks to learn how to skip so she could raise money for you. As you know she has nerve damage and try as she might, was not even close to skipping. Finally after the third week of practice and getting no-where, she broke down and cried. I told her it was ok and that our friends would sponsor her for just trying, but she sobbed and said “I have to skip, it’s for Jess”. She raised $240.00. I just wanted you to know your beautiful daughter has touched us all. Ruby asked me to email you a message – here it is.

    In Ruby words…..
“I wish I could run with you Craig for Jess. I’m sorry Jessy died.
    Love Ruby Russell

She can jog about 5 meters now Craig, so if you need a bit more inspiration I would drive her to you. Keep safe and well, love Jane Russell x

  16. Dear Craig,

I saw you on TV tonight RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS.You are such an inspiration to all. I know what its like to lose a child but often we forget we are not the only ones suffering…

My you continue to inspire people with your fund raising efforts.

Cancer is such a terrible thing and unfortunately it seems to be a part of most family lives. My dad has it at present and I have lost my father in law to it a few years ago…

    I will definately be donating…

    Keep up the good work.

  18. Hi Craig,

Your courage is amazing. My 18 year old son was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma last year. The tumour was in his right pelvis . he has had it removed and reconstructed. Daniel has also just completed 14 rounds of aggressive chemotherapy. I wish you all the best on your journey. Your daughter would be extremely proud of you and all of your efforts. Well done.

  19. Thanks Andrew, Just crossing border today and will be in Adelaide around 6/8/09. Stay tuned.

  20. Dear Helen, My thoughts and wishes are with your family and son. You know the pain of it all and if I can help someone such as yourself hold onto something so precious, then I am a happy man.
    Kindest regards, craig

  21. Hi Craig,

I think what you are doing is amazing. We lost our 19 yr old son Nathan to Ewings Sarcoma last May 2008 after a 10 mth battle with the disease. I had never heard of this type of cancer before his illness so thank you for making people aware of this cancer. You should be so proud of what you are doing in memory of your daughter. If the money you raise can help find a cure and stop families from going through the heartache and pain we have of losing a child it will be wonderful. I am sure your daughter is very proud of you and travelling every inch of the way with you on your journey giving you the strength to continue. Take Care and travel safe.

  22. Dear Michelle, I am amazed at how many are affected. We can make a difference and all it takes is a bit of help from as many as possible. You know the exact feeling that sits within me and what drives me to continue on my mission. I do this not only in memory of Jess, but all those affected.
    Regards, Craig

  23. You are the most Inspiring Person I have ever seen.
The way you continue on when times are tough, is unreal.
I’m sure your daughter is extremely proud of what your doing, and I believe there should be more people like you, to make this place a better place.
I support you 100% and will be donating money to the wonderful cause.

  29. Thanks Sean, We are still raising money and awareness and just watch the money go up over the next two weeks.
Cheers Craig. – still on a mission to reach the million

  30. Hi Craig.
I have just stumbled on your site via facebook and I want to say I am so grateful for your efforts.
I am so sorry you lost your little girl.
My own daughter had Ewings in her pelvis, found in Feb of 07. She had 2 years of treatment, 12 months of that on a trial drug that inhbits IGF1.
She is disease free, but as I am sure you know all too well, none of our family ever take that for granted. There are no guarantees and I thank you so much for bringing this to peoples attention.
    Humbly and sincerely yours.
    Kim
